2012, the End of the World and Jesse Ventura

Do you know who Jesse Ventura is? He is the outspoken ex-governor of Minnesota. You either love him or hate him. Recently, he did an investigative TV show on the 2012 end of the world prophecy and an alleged conspiracy by our government to hide the truth of the potential perils associated with that date.

Conspiracies and prophecies aside, Governor Ventura raised or uncovered some interesting scientific publications that have not received much press.

According to National Academy of Sciences in a report commissioned by NASA and published in 2009, our Sun’s solar flare activity is expected to peak in 2012. Disturbingly, the report compares this forecasted activity with the solar outbreak of 1859 that fried telegraph wires throughout the modern world.

Do you think that solar flare activity would cause a major if not catastrophic disruption of our lifestyle like the movie, 2012? Sit back. The National Academy of Sciences estimates that, “A contemporary repetition of the [1859] event would cause significantly more extensive (and possibly catastrophic) social and economic disruptions.”

What does that mean? In a NASA report summarizing the Academy of Sciences report, NASA estimates that the damage would reach 1 to 2 Trillion dollars in damages.
Let’s compare that to Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina cost us an estimated 80 to 120 Billion dollars. 1 to 2 Trillion is 1000 to 2000 times greater! I think you would agree that is a significant difference!

It is not the dollars. It is the collateral damage, the social damage. Water, sewage, refrigeration, fuel, all these and more would be damaged if not eliminated. Due to the technological infrastructure, rebuilding our electric grid could take years. Are you prepared? Not many of us are.

Alarmingly, NASA’s Themis satellites now show that the magnetic shield that protects us from the Sun’s deadly emissions has holes in it. With a solar emission of large proportions, we can only guess at the consequences.

Whatever you may think about the Mayan 2012 end of the world prophesy, science has some very disturbing predictions for 2012. I believe in science. It gives humanity some sense of truth. We all know science cannot explain many things. Some things are left to faith. But, when science and the metaphysical meet, perhaps it is time to pay attention.

The Mayans predicted the end of the world, as we know it, in 2012. Scientists know that our Sun is in a valley of solar flares, it peaks in cycles. The National Academy of Sciences and NASA predict the end of the valley and a peak of a new cycle for 2012. Coincidence? I don’t know.

Are you willing to take the chance that the New Agers and the doomsday soothsayers are wrong?

2012 – The End of the World and The Science of it All

Posted on 4th December 2009 by in 2012 - Tags: , , , , , ,

Did you see the movie, 2012? There was probably more science in that movie than in all the words written about 2012, the end of the world. Why can I say that? Think of the technology that went into creating the special effects of that movie. I swear it looked like real life photography.

I saw people falling into mile deep crevices, skyscrapers collapsing, and an angry sea devouring the coastline with its mile high tsunami. Not knowing any better, I could have believed that a National Geographic camera operator was recording the devastation. That is good cinematography.

I suspect that the director, Roland Emmerich, got the idea from the prophecy of the Mayan Long Calendar prediction. Do you know how many times the Mayan prophecy was mentioned in the movie? Once.

I can only guess that the prophecy was not mentioned more often because there is not much scientific information to back up the claims of the cataclysmic soothsayers.

Here is what science we do know about the Mayan prediction.

  • The Mayan were great astronomers and mathematicians.
  • The Mayan recorded the paths of celestial bodies.
  • They recorded time in cycles. One of those cycles ends on December 21, 2012. A new one begins.
  • Associated with the codex that identifies that date, a reference is made to one of their gods, Bolon Yookte’ K’uh. This god is a god of war, conflict, and the underworld.
  • The translation of the codex refers to blackness and the descent of the god, Bolon Yookte’ K’uh.

That is it. Everything else is conjecture and, well, prophecy. Much has been inferred from a simple archaeological discovery.

Before we get to arrogant in our criticism of cataclysmic soothsayers and our quest for indisputable truth, we should recognize that even scientists dispute the translation of that codex. As early as 1966, Michael D. Coe, famed archaeologist and anthropologist, wrote in his book, The Maya:

there is a suggestion… that Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth [b'ak'tun]. Thus… our present universe [would] be annihilated on December 24, AD 2011, [later revised to December 23, 2012] when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion.” [Wikipedia].

It comes down to your own system of beliefs and fears. I, for one, want to learn all that I can both fact and conjecture, just in case. Maybe you should too.

Decide for yourself. Is 2012 the end of the world? Prepare for the possibilities. Why not be prepared and arm yourself with knowledge?

2012 – Prophecy or Hype?

Posted on 28th October 2009 by in 2012 - Tags: , , , , , , ,

Is it the beginning of a New Age form of ascension or a Doomsday Armageddon end? Heralded by some as the coming of a rebirth of a new consciousness and by others as the harbinger of chaos and death. Is it prophesy or hype?

Which is it? As the year 2012 approaches, the media will surely blow the trumpets of alarm.  I remember the trumpets blaring with the coming of the year 2000, the turn of the century into a new millennium.  Do you remember the Y2K frenzy?

The potential for a complete breakdown of civilization hung on our ability to reprogram all the computers of the world to accept four simple digits – 2000.  Well, we did it.  Is this new threat of the same kind?  Can we fix it?

As you can guess this is different.  Different because it is of no human man-made substance or hold in your hands data.  It is the product of prophecy and of interpretation.  It is different because it threatens not only our lifestyle, but also life itself.

If it is the coming of new consciousness, then it may only threaten our style of life, our daily comings and goings, our relationships with our families and neighbors.  It may threaten our political behavior and our international behavior.  I say threaten because a new consciousness implies a new way of thinking, an ascension of sorts.  It implies change from the way we are now.  Change is always a threat to us.

If it is doomsday that we face, then surely it threatens life itself. Those that see this future event as catastrophic, see it as a global event.  They see it as an event that will shake the world, one that will affect all of humanity.  That is certainly change.  Could it be an event of annihilation, one that wipes out humanity? Some find such a prediction to be an insult to the Divine.  Nevertheless, believers of many faiths and non-believers, as well, hold that somber belief in Armageddon.

The specific date that is the focus of this prophecy is December 21, 2012, the winter solstice.  That year will be a leap year.  In the United States, it is a presidential election year. There will be a summer Olympics in London.  In that year, American military presence in the Republic of Korea will end.

The focus on December21,2012 stems from the interpretation of the Mayan calendar.  On that day, the Mayan calendar records the end of what the Mayans call the long cycle.  It is the 13th long cycle since the beginning of creation according to Mayan history.

Before we dismiss, these predictions of a new consciousness or total devastation we should take note that there are notable and respected scientists that are doing serious research and study of the Mayan predictions.  Some scientists note that it is in the year 2012 that the Sun will emit intense solar activity that could have cataclysmic consequences for the earth.
